Family raising autistic child with self injurious behavior. Son assessed and observed by 23 behavioral experts over the years— hence familie’s subsequent aversion to title “expert” or “specialist”. Footage (2009) taken after mother had just removed son from group home (which had 3 behavioral experts and numerous “specialists” from various agencies allegedly checking on autistic son while in group home)— While in grouphome, a caregiver left son alone in room to beat self in ear so badly, injury (hematoma to ear) required emergency surgery to repair ear. Mom then pulled autistic son from grouphome. He had lived there for about 4 years. Was placed after “experts” and “specialists” hounded family about the need for them to have a “break from autistic son” because he was destroying and burdening their family. Funny thing is, no adequate IN HOME support was ever offered. Experts felt out of home was the best, since he’d get so much help. He was warehoused in a grouphome. None of the experts and support networks what were supposed to arrive after he was placed–ever arrived. Lesson: don’t place to much hope in “autism experts” or “behavioral experts” because often, at least in our experience, it’s people who have little if any real life or in depth hands on in your face experience with autistic persons. It’s usually people who went to school, got a degree, read some books, did an internship, got a job,do drive by analysis and observations, write reports, make suggestions …
