Joanne Peterson spent the morning talking with high school students, detailing the deadly toll OxyContin and heroin can take. By afternoon, she was planning upcoming programs at two other schools — and by evening, she was talking to parents of Bristol County jail inmates about a family support group for prisoner families. Less than 24 hours after Gov. Deval Patrick slashed state funding for Learn to Cope, a support group for families of opiate addicts, its founder was traveling across three counties to try to stop teens from using heroin and to help addicts get help. The governor cut the Learn to Cope budget from $100000 to $25000, leaving the group now dependent on private donations and whatever grants it can garner.
